What is dMAT Germany?

The digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test for graduate applicants planning to study in Germany. As of 29 June 2026, Indian students applying to selected master's programs at German universities are required to take the dMAT as part of the application process — and the scorecard is now a mandatory document for APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verification.

Rather than testing subject knowledge you've memorised, the dMAT evaluates how you think. It measures your ability to analyse information, identify patterns, solve unfamiliar problems, and apply concepts in an academic setting — the skills German universities expect from postgraduate students. The exam is conducted digitally and consists of two modules of 90 minutes each.

The first dMAT will be held on 26 September 2026, making it directly relevant for students targeting the Summer 2027 intake and beyond.

NOTE: No note-taking allowed.

Rough work and scratch paper are not permitted — every question must be solved on-screen, in the head.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

The requirement does not apply to every master's applicant from India. Currently, the dMAT is mandatory for students who have done an undergraduate degree in the below mentioned disciplines:

The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised, computer-based academic aptitude test introduced by g.a.s.t. In coordination with APS India. This test evaluates your reasoning ability, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This exam is developed and administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft fur Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung).
Students who submitted their APS application before 29 June 2026 are not required to take the dMAT. The requirement applies only to applications under the policy introduced on that date.
Yes, dMAT scorecard is mandatory during APS verification particularly for students applying to affected programs. No, dMAT certificate will not replace the APS verification. APS India will continue to verify the authenticity of academic documents according to the existing APS procedure.
The first dMAT test date is 26 September 2026 and the registrations have already started from 29 June 2026.
g.a.s.t. Charges the dMAT test fee which is €150.00. The fee is payable during registration.
The dMAT certificate will accompany the APS certificate as part of the application document. German universities will decide as how they will make use of this information in their admission process.
The dMAT certificate is issued by g.a.s.t. It is not issued by APS India.
