IELTS - Everything You Need to Know

IELTS exam evaluates your English language skills in four different areas, namely listening, reading, writing, and speaking. There are two types of IELTS exams – IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. People applying for a visa to migrate to English-Speaking countries for work or students planning to study in high school or a vocational training program, take the IELTS General Training test. On the other hand, IELTS Academic is suitable for working professionals or students who wish to pursue higher education at universities abroad. 

All students take the same Listening and Speaking sections. However, the Reading and Writing sections vary in IELTS Academic and IELTS General in terms of difficulty and the type of questions. Be clear about which test type is right for you. Jamboree offers IELTS online prep as well as IELTS coaching classes for both IELTS Academic and General Training.

  

IELTS Academic

Working professionals or students who want to pursue higher education at universities or institutes abroad need to take the IELTS Academic. In this test there are four sections:   

Speaking: IELTS speaking test takes about 11-14 minutes. This section of the test is a face-to-face interview. The interview is structured more like a conversation between the examiner and the test taker. It allows you to talk to the examiner naturally on a familiar topic.

Reading:  This section takes 60 minutes and contains 3 long texts. These texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers and are generic in nature. Students are required to skim and scan these texts for answers.

Writing: IELTS writing test takes 60 minutes. The first task of the test requires you to describe a table, chart, or diagram in 150 words. The second task asks you to write a short essay of about 250 words.  

Listening: This section requires you to listen to four different recordings in which native English speakers are talking. After each recording is over, you will have to answer a series of questions. The first two sections test you on everyday social context and the remaining two on educational and training contexts.

   

General Training

Do you intend to study IELTS online Students planning to study in high school or a vocational training program take IELTS General, apart from them it is also taken by people applying for a visa to migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK.   

IELTS General Training tests your English language proficiency in a more practical and everyday context. It also has four sections, two of which are Listening and Speaking tests that are the same as IELTS Academic in terms of format and difficulty, the other two sections are:

  

Reading: This reading test of IELTS General takes 60 minutes and consists of 3 sections. The first two sections contain short factual texts focussing on topics relevant to everyday life such as applying for jobs, company policies, etc. The third and final section contains one longer and more complex text.

Writing: IELTS General writing section also takes 60 minutes to complete. It requires you to write a letter of 150 words and a short Essay of 250 words.

IELTS Exam Structure

  • 30 Minutes
  • You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes.
  • 60 Minutes
  • The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on the array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming and figuring out the writer's attitudes, opinions and intentions.
  • 60 Minutes
  • The IELTS Writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of general interest based on the module you are taking.
  • 11-14 Minutes
  • The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts.

The IELTS test fee is INR 15,500
You can register online or in person at IDP. The detailed information about registering for the IELTS can be found at www.ieltsidpindia.com. You can also reach us at support@jamboreeeducation.com.
IELTS™ is offered on specific days of the year. One can access the whole schedule which can vary depending on the city by following the given link www.ielts.org
IELTS™ can be taken an unlimited number of times. However, it is highly advisable not to appear for IELTS too many times as it may affect the applicant’s candidature.
IELTS™ score is valid for 2 years from the date the test was taken.
The scores are available 13 days after the exam date.
You may request up to five Test Report Forms (TRF) to be sent to receiving institutions withing one month of taking the test. TRFs sent by courier will be sent through DHL and students will be charged accordingly. IDP IELTS office can arrange electronic submission of TRFs at no extra cost.  More than 5 TRFs are subject to an extra fee plus courier costs.
Almost all the universities take the best score.
Yes, you do need to have the IELTS™ score with you at the time of applying.
