MEXT Scholarship Japan - How To Apply

There are only two pathways to reach MEXT for every level. Students can choose either of the two as per their requirements and needs.

Level

Embassy Pathway (A)q

University Pathway (B)

Undergraduate

MEXT places you; written exam; often a 1-year Japanese prep year.

Apply direct to a G30 English degree; the university nominates you.

Master’s & PhD

Language exam + research plan; MEXT places you at a university.

Secure a supervisor first; the graduate school nominates you.

MBA (Business)

Young Leaders' Program — the only fully-

funded MEXT MBA.

Direct admission to an English MBA; plan funding (limited MEXT slots).

There are a few core differences between the two above mentioned pathways. Though, these both lead to identical benefits and scholarship, but still they have differences. Each segment ahead applies these two routes to one level.

Embassy Recommendation (A Pathway)

University Recommendation (B Pathway)

Apply through the Embassy of Japan, New Delhi (or your regional Consulate).

Apply directly to a MEXT-approved university, which then nominates you.

Most common route for Indian students.

No embassy exam — the university runs its own admission.

Includes a First Screening: written exam + interview.

You choose the university (and, for research, the

supervisor).

MEXT places you at a university (you list preferences).

Nomination slots per university are limited.

English Taught Study: G30 & Language Proof

MEXT was built around Japanese-medium study — but you can now earn a full degree in English.

Global 30 (2009) funded 13 top universities to build English degrees; the Top Global University Project (37 universities, to 2024/27) expanded it. English-medium programmes grew from ~33 to 150+ and are now core operations.

“G30” is now shorthand for any English-taught degree: no Japanese needed at entry, intakes usually start in autumn (Sep/Oct).

NOTE: Many programs waive TOEFL/IELTS if your earlier schooling or degree was English medium - a medium-of-instruction certificate is usually accepted instead.
