CORNELL UNIVERSITY

CORNELL UNIVERSITY

Cornell University was founded in 1865 with the then-radical goal of teaching and contributing to all fields of knowledge. Cornell has been a co-educational, non-sectarian institution with no restrictions on admission based on religion or race since its inception. Cornell values its liberal traditions. A recent article in the Cornell Chronicle celebrated the admission of the first all-female class to its renowned Farrier program in veterinary science. Cornell was also the first to offer journalism degrees and the first to teach modern Far Eastern languages. Cornell's main campus is located on East Hill in Ithaca, New York, with a stunning view of the city and Cayuga Lake.

The university covers 2,300 acres of land and houses laboratories, administrative buildings, and nearly all of the academic buildings, athletic facilities, auditoriums, and museums on campus. The architecture is a medley of Collegiate Gothic, Victorian, and Neoclassical structures, as well as international and modernist structures. Other campuses and facilities in New York City include the medical campus Weill Cornell and the engineering campus Cornell Tech. Cornell has an outpost in the Gulf state of Qatar, making it the first American medical college to do so.

The campus in Ithaca is situated in the center of the Finger Lakes region, surrounded by greenery and beautiful landscape. Students here are just as likely to be found sitting under a tree with their nose in a book as they are participating in one of Cornell's many clubs, societies, and activities.

First-year undergraduates live in the North Campus, while upper-level students frequently focus on the communities they have discovered, choosing a fraternity or sorority, a co-op, a themed residence hall, or an apartment off-campus. On the campus, there are over 1,000 organizations ranging from skateboarding to volunteer programs. Students who enjoy sports or the outdoors can participate in courses such as caving and rope climbing, and there are four sports centers for those who prefer to stay fit.

Foodies are also well catered for, with Cornell ranked as one of the top ten universities for food, with over 30 dining options on campus.

Even though every graduate receives a degree from Cornell University, each of Cornell's seven undergraduate colleges and schools admits its own students and provides its own faculty. The College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are Cornell's two largest undergraduate colleges. Its graduate schools include the prestigious S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management, the College of Engineering, the Law School, and the Weill Cornell Medical College. Cornell is also well-known for its highly regarded College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Hotel Administration.
