Why Choose CMU?

Over the last decade, more than 400 CMU-affiliated start-ups have raised over $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment figures are especially high due to the sheer size of Pittsburgh's growing autonomous vehicle cluster, which includes Uber, Aurora, and Argo AI, all of which have strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge science, Nobel and Turing prizes, ground-breaking performances, innovative start-ups, driverless cars, robots, hands-on learning, big data, and bigger ambitions they say CMU doesn't imagine the future, it creates it.

The lush campus of Carnegie Mellon University

The 140-acre main campus of Carnegie Mellon University is located three miles (5 kilometres) from downtown Pittsburgh, between Schenley Park and the neighbourhoods of Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Oakland. The University of Pittsburgh's campus borders Carnegie Mellon to the west. Carnegie Mellon owns 81 buildings in Pittsburgh's Oakland and Squirrel Hill neighbourhoods.

For decades, "Skibo Hall," the University's student union, was the epicentre of campus life. Skibo Hall's design was typical of Mid-Century Modern architecture when it was built in the 1950s, but it was ill-equipped to deal with advances in computer and internet connectivity. The original Skibo was demolished in the summer of 1994, and it was replaced by a new student union with cutting edge technologies.

In 2014, Carnegie Mellon renamed their University Centre to the Cohen University Centre in honour of the university's eighth president, Jared Cohen.
