The University of Michigan is a public research university located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, was founded in 1817 in Detroit, 20 years before the territory became a state. It is Michigan's oldest university. In 1837, the school was relocated to Ann Arbor on 40 acres of land that is now known as Central Campus. Since its inception in Ann Arbor, the flagship university campus has grown to include more than 584 major buildings spread across Central and North Campus, a combined area of more than 780 acres, two satellite campuses in Flint and Dearborn (each separately accredited), and a Center in Detroit.

It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 31,329 students (fall 2020), a city setting, and a campus size of 3,207 acres. The academic calendar is divided into three trimesters.

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has ranked 23rd in National Universities in the Best Colleges 2022 edition.

Close to one-quarter of all students are housed on campus, with many residence halls serving undergraduates and family housing primarily for graduate students. There are also off-campus apartments, houses, and co-ops that house upper-division and graduate students, as well as 'theme communities' within residence halls where students can immerse themselves among peers who share similar interests.

There are over 1,600 clubs and societies in Michigan, including engineering project teams, community service organizations, and charitable projects. The Michigan Marching Band, which has 350 student members, has been in existence for over a century, and other notable musical ensembles include the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club, a men's chorus with over 100 members.

Michigan has a long history of student activism, and there are numerous organizations dedicated to various worthwhile causes. Some, such as United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), devote themselves to more left-wing causes, in this case holding multinational corporations accountable for exploiting their factory workers, but there are also conservative groups, such as Young Americans for Freedom, and non-partisan groups.

Cultural and ethnic student organizations help students form smaller communities among the large university population, and publications like the Michigan Daily, which is published five days a week during the Fall and Winter terms, keep students up to date on campus news.
