The couple modelled the university after another renowned university – Cornell University. In fact, in 1891, Stanford was referred to as the “Cornell of the West”, as the majority of its faculty were former Cornell affiliates.

The administration of the university is handled by a corporate trust, which is governed by a privately appointed board of trustees (the maximum number of trustees, at any point in time, can’t be more than 38). These trustees serve a five-year term and meet five-time annually. This board is also responsible for appointing the president, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the university.
