History of Stanford University:

Stanford University was founded in the year 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in the memory of their only child – Leland Stanford Jr. The couple's child had died of typhoid, and as a memorial, they decided to build a university on their farm. The couple's intent while building the university was clear – to promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on the behalf of humanity & civilization.

The couple modelled the university after another renowned university – Cornell University. In fact, in 1891, Stanford was referred to as the “Cornell of the West”, as the majority of its faculty were former Cornell affiliates.

Since its incorporation, Stanford University has been non-sectarian, co-education, and affordable. The university has been teaching the traditional liberal arts and technology and engineering – the two pillars of the new America.
