General Guidelines to Answer Academic Discussion Practice Questions 

In this section, we are introducing the Writing for an Academic Discussion task, which will now take the place of the Independent Writing task in the new TOEFL exam format. Take advantage of the complimentary practice questions of the new TOEFL writing task provided below. Feel free to practice as much as you can to enhance your familiarity and boost your confidence in tackling the new assignment.

General guidelines: 

In your response, you should do the following –

  • Express and support your opinion.
  • Contribute to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

New TOEFL Writing Task Practice Question 1

Professor Anderson:

In our recent class on environmental economics, we discussed two approaches to address water scarcity: water pricing and water conservation regulations. I would like to hear your opinion on which approach you believe is more effective in managing water resources. In your response, express your preference and provide supporting reasons. Your contribution should be at least 100 words long.
