Study Masters in Netherlands

The country is also well-known for its innovative education methods and offers over 1500 education programs in English by more than 75 different higher educational institutions. Many of the programs are designed, keeping in mind the international students’ group, making it the perfect destination for higher education.

Study MS in the Netherlands

  • A student will get to select from 39 applied sciences, 13 research and 14 other institutions for higher education in the Netherlands.
  • The Netherlands Government has subsidized higher education in the country, which contributes towards it being more affordable than most other countries. Almost 16% of students in the Netherlands come from abroad, which is one of the highest ratios all around Europe.
  • An MS graduate earns handsome salaries that can see a 9% incremental rise every 15 months.
  • There are more than 400 scholarships available for international students to select and apply from.
  • The Netherlands is home 13 out of the 350 top universities appearing in the QS world university rankings.

Top MS universities in the Netherlands

The list of universities among the top QS world university rankings for 2020 includes:

The fields offering MS courses are diverse, ranging from engineering, medicine, mathematics, basic sciences to humanities and social sciences.

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria which are necessary for applying to a Masters course in the Netherlands are:

  • Students must have a Bachelor’s degree in the field of relevance. If the MS degree is based on research, then the bachelor's degree should have a research-oriented element as well.
  • Average GPA score of at least 6.5 on a scale of 10
  • GMAT score of 600 or GRE score ranging from 300 to 330
  • English language proficiency proof

Tuition fees and program duration

An EU student’s average tuition fee ranges in €1800 to €12,000 annually, based on the program type and university. For non-EU students, the tuition fees are around €8000 to €20,000 annually.

Any master’s program based on research will take up to 1-2 years for completion, which is 60-120 hours of credits. The courses in engineering, mathematics, sciences and agriculture require 120 credit-hours or a 2-year program. Applied arts also need from 60 to 120 credit hours based on academic discipline.

Application deadlines

  • For the courses starting in September, the usual application deadline is May 1. For some other universities, it may be earlier - February 1 or March 1.
  • For the courses starting in February, the application deadline is October 1 to November 1.

Student visa requirements

Every student who applies for a visa in the Netherlands requires a sponsor. This is usually the university that you're enrolled in and it also carries out the visa application process.

A student must acquire a long-stay visa, or an MVV, and a provisional residential permit, or a VVR. The MVV has an expiry of 90 days. The VVR’s expiry is three months after the completion of the degree.

The visa rejection rate in the Netherlands is as low as 8.06%.

Health insurance

It is mandatory for international students to have health insurance at the time of visa application. You can enrol in Dutch public health insurance once you get employed in the Netherlands. Work permits are essential for international students while not required by EU countries’ students.

Job opportunities after graduation

The Netherlands has a 96% employment rate, making it an attractive study destination for international students. Approximately 84% of international students get placement offers before the completion of their degree. Employees with a Masters in the Netherlands are subject to a 9% increment every 15 months under the law.

International students are allowed to stay in the Netherlands for up to a year after their graduation to seek employment without a separate work permit. During this year, there would not be any kind of restriction on employment opportunities. Once you get employed, you can apply for a longer-term permit under the Netherland’s Highly Skilled Migrant Scheme.

The Netherlands encourages and maintains an online portal to give advice to international students who are interested in working there after completing their education.
