The most widely used standardized exam for admission to leading universities is now shorter, faster and more in tune with today’s academic and professional requirements. Here are the most asked questions about the shorter GRE test!

When can I register for the new shorter GRE test?

ETS will roll out the new GRE exam beginning from September 22, 2023. Registrations for the new GRE exam have now begun. You can head over to the official website of ETS to register for the GRE exam.

What is changing on the new shorter GRE test?

ETS has made the following changes on the new shorter GRE test:

  1. Test duration has been reduced from under 4 hours to under 2 hours
  2. The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections have 46 lesser questions
  3. The test will no longer have the 10-minute scheduled break
  4. The results will be available sooner in 8-10 days as compared to the old 10-15 days
  5. Only one Analytical Writing essay task will remain

This is how the new GRE will look like:

New GRE format 2023

Section Name Number of sections Number of questions Time allotted
Analytical Writing 1 section 1 essay task 30 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning 2 sections 27 questions 47 minutes

  2. Graduate & professional programs will continue to use the GRE scores as they have
  3. The GRE exam fees will remain the same at ₹ 22,550
  4. The score scale on the new GRE test will remain the same

Which Analytical Writing essay task will remain on the new shorter GRE test?

Reduced to just 1 essay task, the Analytical Writing section keeps the ‘Analyze an Issue’ while ‘Analyze an Argument’ is removed.

Until when can I take the current GRE?

The current GRE will be available till September 20, 2023. Test-takers who schedule an appointment on or after September 22, 2023 will have to take the shorter GRE.

Where can I take the shorter GRE?

You can take the shorter GRE both at your home or the test center, as per your preference.

How many times can I take the new shorter GRE test?

You can take the GRE general test once every 21 days, but only 5 times within a 12-month period.

When will the Official Practice Exams and Official Guide be available for the new shorter GRE test?

Two GRE official practice tests POWERPREP® will be available September onwards. POWERPREP® Online version will be free of cost, providing scores for the Quant and Verbal sections only while the POWERPREP PLUS® Online will be available at a cost of$39.95 but will provide scores for all the sections.

When will the study materials be available for the shorter GRE test?

Since ETS is only reducing the number of questions on the GRE exam and not changing the content of the test, you can still use the existing practice tests, study materials and other GRE prep resources. Remember, you no longer have to prepare for the ‘Analyze an Argument’ task on the AWA.

What Version of the GRE Should I Take–current GRE General Test or the Shorter GRE General Test?

When deciding on which GRE exam to take, consider your college application deadline. The scores for the new GRE test will be delivered in 8-10 days. So, if your application deadlines are in the first week of October or before that, it’s recommended that you take the current GRE exam. But, if your application deadlines do not factor in right now, you can pick either of the two GREs based on your preference. Remember, the right time to make a decision is now!
