As part of your application process to a foreign university, you are required to present academic transcripts or transcripts of records. This is done to assess your academic performance in your previous educational institutions and to ascertain your calibre for the program you are applying to.

What are Academic Transcripts?

Academic transcripts or Transcripts of Records (ToRs) is a set of documents that are used to show a student’s record of education and has information about courses completed, grades scored, subject-wise breakdown of marks, degrees and awards held. It is a detailed record of your academic performance which has been duly signed and stamped by your respective education institutions where you have previously studied. It is an official document that lists all the modules completed, their respective credit value, grades obtained and exemptions granted if any. It is made on the official letterhead of the granting institution.

An interim or provisional transcript is issued when you are yet to complete your degree or course. Academic transcripts are also known as diploma supplement, statement of learning, record of achievement, Cumulative Record File (CRF) and other similar terms.

What do Academic Transcripts Contain?

Each academic transcript usually contains the following information of the students-

  • Name of the Issuing Academic Institution
  • Accreditation of the Academic Institution
  • Name of the Student
  • Name of the Student’s parents
  • Date of birth of the student
  • Year of graduating or completing the program of study
  • Roll Number/Identity of the Student
  • Name of the Degree obtained
  • Duration of the course
  • List of Courses undertaken
  • Marks/grades obtained in all the courses
  • Total Aggregate of the Marks/Grades obtained

Academic transcripts are one of the most important documents needed as a part of your application for your higher education. They contain detailed information about your academic performance and achievements. Academic transcripts are official documents issued by the accredited institution and therefore are a reliable and authentic source of your academic record.

Official academic transcripts are the ones duly signed and stamped by the educational institution on their official letterhead. Sometimes, the educational institution takes longer to release the academic transcripts. Under such circumstances, the students can use the unofficial academic transcripts for the time being. However, they will have to get the official academic transcripts verified later on with their respective universities.

Unofficial academic transcripts are in the form of digital copies or photocopies of the official academic documents. They have all the academic information of the student except the granting institution’s official stamp and signature.

To get their academic transcripts, students can reach out to their previous educational institutions and request the same. The official academic transcripts are sent in a sealed envelope duly signed and stamped by the issuing authority. Students can request multiple copies of their academic transcripts.
