If you were relieved when GMAT’s AWA section was removed, you probably won’t enjoy this update. GMAC, the conducting body of the GMAT, has now introduced the Business Writing Assessment (BWA). This test will evaluate some skills that B-Schools value, including critical thinking and communication skills to offer a complete picture of a candidate’s readiness. So in this blog we will cover everything you need to know about the test and whether or not you should take it. Shall we?

What is the GMAC Business Writing Assessment (BWA)?
GMAC, or Graduate Management Admission Council, has introduced a 30-minute Business Writing Assessment test. This assessment aims to demonstrate your ability to synthesise and convey complex ideas to your favourite B-Schools.
In the online test, you will be tasked with analysing a brief argument. The goal is to get an objective critique of the argument’s reasoning and evidence in a well-structured and persuasive response. All within the 30-minute time limit. Were we quick to celebrate the elimination of AWA section? Yes, it looks like it.
It’s true that business schools want to know that you can communicate important ideas critically and concisely through your writing. According to GMAC, the Business Writing Assessment is an opportunity to show your analysis, reasoning, and written communication skills beyond traditional application materials.
Are colleges asking for Business Writing Assessment test scores?
The short answer is yes, and while not many B-Schools are asking for Business Writing Assessment test score, Harvard is!
That is correct. Harvard Business School has decided to mandate the additional test. You don’t need to have the results of the GMAC Business Writing Assessment to apply, but they will require a writing assessment for anyone admitted to the program.
There is an old joke: How would you know someone actually went to Harvard? The answer is—they’ll tell you! So what if you have to spend 2-6 hours preparing for the BWA? Harvard is worth it.
MIT’s Sloan School of Management is next to follow suit. Their Admissions Committee said that they may require applicants to take the GMAC Business Writing Assessment after interview invitations are sent. And we have a hunch that more schools will follow.

Should you take the GMAC Business Writing Assessment?
This question is only valid if the B-School you are applying to does not necessarily ask for a GMAC Business Writing Assessment test score. What do you do then? Well, ideally, anything that testifies to your suitability for the MBA program adds value towards your admission decision and this test is one of them.
That being said, if writing is not where you shine and your B-School is also not explicitly asking for a Business Writing Assessment test score. Then we think it is safe to say that you can skip the test.
You can also offer to take the assessment in your MBA interview. Students often ask for course suggestions that can supplement their program or give them a head start. It shows commitment and sincerity – you can never go wrong with that!
Our advice? Take the test while you have the time to prepare for it properly. Instead of taking it at the last minute during the interview stage or if there’s a change in the school’s requirements. If you score well, it’s a plus on your application, and if not, well, you always have the option to not send the score.
