GMAC offers unmatched flexibility compared to other standardised tests when it comes to the GMAT exam dates; you can literally take the GMAT exam on any day of the year (except Sundays, of course– we mean all of us deserve a day off!) and public holidays. This blog gives you a detailed overview of where, how and when you can take the GMAT exam, including the GMAT exam dates 2023.

Where can I take the GMAT exam

The GMAT online test from home can be taken on any of the 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. You can even schedule an appointment 24 hours before taking the GMAT exam. But, don’t forget, you still have to apply to your dream business schools before their respective application deadlines.

Here’s a catch, though, if you’re planning to take the GMAT exam at a test centre, you must know the test dates for that particular centre. The GMAT exam centres allot specific dates every month, and to get your desired GMAT exam date and time slot, it’s important to book your appointment in advance. 29 centres across 23 cities in India conduct the GMAT exam.

How can I take the GMAT exam?

The GMAT exam can be taken five times a year, and if you’re not satisfied with your exam score, you can re-attempt it after 16 calendar days. The total number of GMAT exam attempts in a lifetime is limited to 8 times.

The best way to pick your GMAT exam date is the ‘backward approach’, an idea that comes from Steve Jobs’s famous graduation speech wherein he said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” When deciding on your GMAT exam date, keep the following in mind-

B-school deadlines- Keep track of the business school deadlines that you want to apply to. It is recommended that you keep aside at least 6 to 7 months before your b-school application deadlines for your GMAT exam preparation. Don’t forget that you’ll also need time to work on your application essays, resume, and LORs.

GMAT prep time- An essential part of building your career in management, you need to allocate ample time for your GMAT preparation which also needs retaking the exam if you do not secure your desired GMAT score in the previous attempts. However, we recommend giving it your best shot on the first attempt itself.

How to schedule your GMAT exam?

We have broken down the process to schedule your GMAT exam into 5 simple steps:

      1. Decide the application round of your target b-school to which you want to apply.
      2. Get your GMAT study plan in place 8 to 10 months before your b-school deadline.
      3. Schedule your GMAT exam appointment at least 6 months before the application deadline.
      4. Keep a minimum of 30-60 days in between in case you’d like to retake the GMAT exam.
      5. Get your desired GMAT score and start preparing your LORs, resume and application essays.

For instance, if your b-school application deadline is in October, you may schedule your GMAT exam someday in February, i.e., six months before the deadline.
